What to Expect From a Boudoir Session with Perry Hancock Photo
Most of the women who reach out to me about boudoir start their message the same way. Some version of: I have never done anything like this before. I am not sure I am the right person for this kind of session. I do not know if I will feel comfortable.
I want to be honest with you about something: that is almost everyone. The women who walk out of a session feeling like they could not believe those images were of them — most of them started exactly where you are right now.
Boudoir is not for a specific body type or a specific season of life. It is not just for brides, though plenty of brides book it. It is for the woman who has spent years being the one behind the camera. The one who just came out the other side of something hard and wants to mark it. The new mother who barely recognizes her own body and wants to. The woman who simply decided that this birthday was the one where she was going to do something entirely for herself.
Whatever brought you here, this is what working with me looks like.
Before the Session — The Consultation
Before anything else happens, we talk. Not a form, not a questionnaire — an actual conversation about what you are hoping to feel and what you are nervous about and what you want these images to be for you.
Some women come in with a clear vision. Others have no idea what they want beyond a general sense that they want to feel seen and beautiful. Both are completely fine starting points. My job in the consultation is to understand enough about you to make sure that on the day of your session, you are not guessing what to do next — you are just present.
We will talk about the space, the flow of the session, what to bring, what to wear, and anything that is making you hesitant. If something is worrying you, say it. I have heard most versions of the concern already and I would rather address it before the session than have you carry it into the room with you.
The Space
Sessions are held in a private, carefully chosen studio space near Huntsville — a calm, quiet environment with warm, intentional lighting and no unnecessary distractions. You will not walk into a cluttered space or a setting that feels clinical or uncomfortable. The environment is set up to make you feel at ease from the moment you arrive.
It is a fully private space. No one walks in. No one interrupts. It is just you, the light, and a photographer who has done this enough times to know how to make the whole thing feel completely natural.
Hair and Makeup
Professional hair and makeup are not included in the session fee, but I send every client a curated guide beforehand with trusted stylists in the Huntsville and Madison area who work regularly with boudoir clients. I strongly encourage booking one of them.
This is not about looking like someone else. It is about arriving at your session already feeling like the best version of yourself, so that we can spend the session making images rather than getting you comfortable. When you feel put together walking in, everything that comes after is easier.
That said — if you are someone who does not wear much makeup in real life and heavy glam does not feel like you, tell me that in the consultation. We will plan accordingly. The goal is always that the images look like you, not a performance of you.
What Happens During the Session
I will guide you through the whole thing. You do not need to know how to pose. You do not need to have done this before. Part of what I do is pay attention to what is working and redirect gently when something is not — which means you are never left standing somewhere wondering what to do with your hands.
The session has a natural rhythm to it. The first few minutes are always the most self-conscious for most people. By the middle of the session, that tends to shift. By the end, most women are surprised by how quickly it went and how different it felt from what they expected.
I shoot in a documentary style, which means I am looking for the real moments — not just the posed ones. The laugh that happened between setups. The expression that came through when you stopped thinking about it. Those are often the frames that end up meaning the most.
What to bring
Bring whatever makes you feel like yourself — lingerie, an oversized shirt, a robe, something that belonged to someone you love, something brand new that you bought just for this. There is no required uniform. Bring options if you want them and we will decide together what works in the space and the light. I recommend two or three outfit options at most — enough variety without overwhelming the session.
Who This Session Is For
Brides who want something intimate and personal to give their partner. Women marking a birthday, a divorce, a recovery, a milestone — any moment that deserves to be honored with something lasting. Mothers who want to see themselves outside of that role for an hour. Women who have spent years dismissing photos of themselves and want to finally have images they do not want to delete.
If you have talked yourself out of this before, I want you to know that the version of you that exists right now — not ten pounds from now, not after you feel more ready, not someday — is worth photographing. That is not a platitude. It is something I have watched be true in this work over and over again.
Your Gallery
Your fully edited gallery will be delivered within two to three weeks of your session. Every image is edited with care and delivered ready to download, save, and print. There is no pressure to purchase add-ons or upgrades after the fact — what you book is what you get.
Most clients tell me that seeing their gallery is the part they were least prepared for. Not because the images are perfect in a filtered, unrecognizable way — but because they look like themselves, and they are beautiful, and those two things turned out not to be in conflict after all.
