Some weddings you photograph. Some weddings you get to be inside of — where the line between vendor and family blurs just enough that you put the camera down for a second and think, I need to remember this feeling.
Mandy Kate and George’s wedding was the second kind.

The Day That Chose Its Own Shape
Mandy Kate had a plan. Most brides do. But when her father’s health changed the landscape of what was possible, she did something a lot of people wouldn’t have: she let go of the original vision without losing a single piece of what actually mattered.
She downsized. She simplified. She made it calm.
And what was left — after all the things that fell away — was the most essential, distilled version of a wedding day I’ve photographed in nearly ten years of doing this. Just the people who loved them most. Just the moments that meant everything. Just presence.
St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Downtown Huntsville
St. Mary’s is one of those spaces that does the emotional work before anyone says a word. High ceilings. Light that falls through old glass. The kind of room that makes you breathe differently the moment you walk in.
The ceremony was quiet in the best way. Not small — intimate. There’s a difference. Small is about numbers. Intimate is about the feeling in the room when everyone there loves the people at the altar.
Her dad was there. In his seat near the front, watching the doors.
He couldn’t walk her down the aisle. So her brothers did. And in the hallway, in the moment before the doors opened, she was taking deep breaths and they were telling her she could do it. I watched her shoulders drop. She nodded once. And then they walked.
That nod is what I photograph. The moment someone decides to be brave.
She Kicked Off Her Shoes
I’ve been doing this long enough to know that the moment a bride kicks off her shoes, the real party has started.
Mandy Kate kicked them off early. Of course she did. That’s exactly who she is — someone who decides that comfort and joy are more important than the performance of perfection. Someone who makes room for everyone around her to relax by relaxing first herself.
I’ve known Mandy Kate long enough to know that kindness isn’t something she performs. It radiates from her. The way she loves people. The way she shows up. The way she makes everyone feel like there’s always a seat next to her.
The Huntsville Museum of Art Reception
The Huntsville Museum of Art is one of those venues that makes a photographer unreasonably happy. Architecture with personality. Interesting light. Walls that give you something to work with beyond white drapery and twinkle lights.
The reception felt like the whole day exhaled. The ceremony had been full of weight and meaning and quiet bravery. The reception was full of people who loved these two, dancing and laughing and celebrating a couple who had navigated a hard season with so much grace.
The Moment I Put the Camera Down
In the middle of bridesmaid portraits, Mandy Kate looked at me and said: “Perry, get up here with the girls. You’re a bridesmaid too.”
I said, wait — really?
And all the girls started yelling yes, come on.
I’ve been photographing weddings for nearly ten years. I have never been pulled into the frame like that. Not because it doesn’t happen, but because Mandy Kate is genuinely, remarkably, consistently that kind of person — the kind who looks around a room and notices who’s been left out and does something about it without making it a thing.
That moment meant more to me than she probably realizes. It was the whole day in one gesture.
She didn’t just invite me to photograph her wedding. She made me feel like I belonged there.
Mandy Kate and George — thank you for letting me be there. Not just behind the camera, but in the room. It’s a gift I don’t take lightly.
Happy everything. I love you both. ♥
